Surf Trip Basics

January 5, 2015 Elizabeth Gist

So I'm sure all of you are aware of how much time I spend on Google Flights. I'm always searching for cheap flights for my next surf trip, but what do I pack for that last minute flight when I find it?

I Travel light, single backpack that fits under the seat in front of me. I don't have to spend extra money on baggage fees, more money for Pina Coladas, if you know what I mean. But when you travel light you have to pack light!

Today I'm sharing a few essentials that for sure shouldn't be left at home!

  1. Comfy oversize t-shirt. This one is from bespoke surf brand Salt Gypsy. I spend a lot of time in Hostels when I travel, its the best way to make new friends. But hostels mean shared sleeping, shared kitchen, shared everything and a good oversize t-shirt is great for keeping things comfy but modest at the same time. Makes a perfect beach cover up too! And as an added bonus I've found that advertising your "Surf Trip" status will get you less hassle from U.S customs on re entry.
  2. Spending 4 hours a day or more surfing under the tropical sun will get you burned without the proper protection. Most people forget that your lips need protecting too. At least I did when I got blessed with an unexpected swell at Folly beach this summer. Made for some careful kisses from my hubby! What I love about this lip balm by Sun Bum is its SPF 30 but it also tastes amazing! And it's shiny enough to wear it out as a lip gloss.
  3. Ladies board shorts with a zippered pocket! Hell yes!! I have been asking for these for years!! Not all leashes have a pocket and stashing money in your bikini for that post surf drink means you risk losing it in a wipe out. I always wore boys board shorts but they run long and aren't that flattering on. Packing boardies in addition to your bikini bottoms come with a couple bonuses. A. They offer extra coverage so you can skip shaving a day. And B. You can wear them out of the water too which eliminates the need for packing a pair of shorts. I just ordered this pair from Roxy. I'll let you guys know how I like them.
  4. I never leave home without a good rash guard! Yes, I have tattoos so I need extra sun protection but spending every day in the water requires extra sun protection for everyone. And a rash guard gives you a little extra layer for dawn patrol surf sessions! I've always wanted this one from surf brand The Seea.

Last minute overnight trips

November 10, 2014 Elizabeth Gist

are the best way to cure that " I need a surf trip stat" itch. If you've been looking for flights every two hours for the last 5 days, and cant score an affordable flight to anywhere with decent swell, it's time to call your lady friends for a quick overnight outta town. Joshua tree, San Clemente and of course the very popular Ojai are my top three places to jump in the car and take of to on a moments notice.

Couple months ago I did just that and went to Ojai with my #coffeetalkthursday babes.

We left L.A Sunday around noon and arrived at the Ojai Rancho Inn around 2pm with enough afternoon sun to still enjoy the pool. Couple hours later and after some yummy Sopes at The Farmer and the Cook, we were enjoying local tunes at the Inns monthly outdoor music event and sipping beers from their newly opened Chiefs Peek pool side bar.

One of my favorite things about the Ojai Rancho Inn is the in room hot tub. Perfect for a late night splash and giggle session after drinks with your lady friends! We definitely enjoyed that and the free bikes we rode to breakfast the next morning!!

Now back to Google Flights ;)
